Why they keep coming back in Al Rawabi

It usually arrives inside pilgrims' luggage and grocery bags, then settles in the kitchen of a furnished flat where warmth and food sit close together, and from there it spreads between the units.

Larger, it climbs up from the deep drainage and the rock tunnels beneath the towers, showing itself on the ground floor, in the car park and around the building entrances.

Appliance heat

In furnished flats the water heaters and fridges run without a break as guests change over, and that steady warmth gives the German cockroach a sheltered spot to lay near the motor.

The narrow gap behind the fridge in a small flat kitchen gathers heat, crumbs and moisture in one place, so it is the first spot we check before an infestation spreads.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, so we seal leaking bathroom and kitchen pipes in the units first, cutting off its drink before its dinner.

What you see at night

One cockroach crossing the kitchen at night usually means dozens hidden in the cracks by day; in a crowded tower we read that as a sign of an infested riser, not a single flat.

Questions about this district

I live in a pilgrim tower. Is treating my flat alone enough?

Usually not. The vertical pipe runs connect your flat to the neighbours above and below, and if one riser stays infested the cockroaches come back. We check the units linked along the same stack and treat the ones we find, not your flat on its own.

The flat is furnished and guests keep changing. When should it be treated?

The best moment is between one guest leaving and the next arriving, while the unit stands empty. We check the furniture, kitchen and drawers that may have carried eggs in with earlier luggage, and treat before the new guest moves in.

Cockroaches come out of the ground-floor drain. What can be done?

That is the American cockroach coming up from the deep drainage under the building. We treat the floor gullies, the water traps and the pipe openings on the ground floor and in the basement, and fit barriers at the points it climbs through at night.

My neighbour treated his flat and the roaches moved to mine. Can that happen?

Yes, and it is common in towers. When a single unit is sprayed, the survivors flee along the pipework to the nearest warm flat. That is why we coordinate treatment of the adjoining units together where we can, so the problem does not simply shift next door.

The building is cut into the mountain with a damp basement. Does that make it worse?

It can. Basements dug into rock stay damp and poorly ventilated, which is ideal for the American cockroach. We inspect the basement and its drainage channels closely, because it is often the source of what shows up on the upper floors.

Do you treat the whole tower or flat by flat?

Either. In a crowded tower, treating the risers, basement and shared drainage works better than one isolated unit, and we coordinate with the building management to cover the connected flats in a single pass when that is what the problem needs.
