Why they keep coming back in Al Zahir

In the slope-built blocks of Al Zahir we notice that most reports begin on a ground floor holding a shop or a bakery, and only later do the cockroaches appear in the flats above. The method is set out in full on our Cockroach control service.

The first reason

The valley before the kitchen

The blocks here look onto the wadi channel, and the drainage empties into its floor. American cockroaches breed in those manholes, then rise through gully traps and floor outlets. Treating the kitchen on its own leaves the real source running outdoors, untouched, ready to send the next wave up.

The second reason

A building set into the slope

Because these blocks stand on a hillside, the waste stacks run vertically between floors over long distances. Cockroaches travel inside those pipes from one flat to the next, which is why we treat the building as one connected unit rather than a single isolated flat.

Al Zahir is Makkah's northern gate, and its roadside ground floors are shops, bakeries and small stores that take in goods and cartons all day long. German cockroaches ride in with those cartons and move up into the kitchens above, so we close that route as part of the treatment.

The species and the place decide the method

The floor of the Al Zahir wadi gathers both sewage and seasonal rainwater, and the older drainage runs there stay warm and damp all year. That is precisely the environment the American cockroach favours for breeding close to buildings.

Concentrated in the kitchens of flats sitting above the roadside shops and bakeries, and it arrives hidden inside cartons of stock and provisions carried up from below.

Appliance heat

The heat from a fridge motor or an oven gives cockroaches steady warmth in these slope-side flats, keeping them active even when the mountain air cools after dark.

The gap behind the fridge is dark, warm and close to the rising waste stack of the building, so it is the first place we check in an Al Zahir flat.

Water before food

A cockroach looks for water before food, and the leaks in the old slope pipework supply it under the sinks, so we dry those points before anything is sprayed.

What you see at night

The cockroach you see on the wall at night in Al Zahir has come out for water; the nest stays hidden near a warm, damp point inside the kitchen or bathroom.

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Gel bait into joints and cracks, targeted spray where it is warranted, and dust in the dry voids behind appliances.

Questions about this district

There is a shop and a bakery under our building, does that matter?

Yes. The commercial ground floors along the Madinah road are a recurring source: German cockroaches come in with the bakery's supplies and then climb into the flats. We treat the contact points between the shop, the stairwell and the shared pipework, not your flat on its own.

Our neighbours on the other floors are complaining about them too

Al Zahir's slope-built blocks are linked by long vertical waste stacks that cockroaches use to move between floors. If only your flat is treated, they return from the neighbours, so we follow the line of the rising stack and treat its crossing points on every floor we can reach.

Our block sits on the edge of the wadi, do they come from outside?

Usually yes. The American cockroach breeds in the manholes and sewer network at the wadi floor and enters through gully traps and ground-level openings. We place barriers at those entry points, treat the nearby manholes, and seal the cracks around the external pipes so the outdoor source stops feeding the building.

Our building is old, does the ageing pipework make it worse?

In the older parts of Al Zahir near Al Hujun, the pipework, cracks and voids around the fittings give the eggs somewhere to hide beyond the reach of any spray. There we rely on baiting inside those voids and sealing the cracks far more than on surface spraying.

Travellers pass through and we host often, does it count?

Al Zahir sits at Makkah's northern entrance, and the bags and provisions that arrive with guests can carry a single cockroach, which is enough to start a colony. You need not stop hosting, but we check the kitchen and store after the busy periods and set preventive bait at the entry points.

The big cockroaches come out of the bathroom drain at night

That is the mark of the American cockroach rising from the wadi's sewer network. We treat the drain itself, fit a stopper or a mesh over the outlet, and follow the pipe back to where it enters the building, rather than simply spraying the walls.
