The first reason

The trade downstairs is the reservoir

Most As Salamah buildings on the old road are shops at street level with homes stacked above. Cockroaches breed in the store rooms of the restaurants and bakeries and climb the shared risers after dark, so treating a single flat does little unless the source below it is closed off too.

Visitor flats and the luggage they bring

Close to the Umrah checkpoint, furnished flats change occupants week by week. German cockroaches arrive inside luggage and second hand furniture, and every new guest can bring the risk back, so we treat the flat and check the neighbouring units in the same building rather than assuming the problem stops at one door.

From the checkpoint to Al Qazzaz

The district spans older blocks near the checkpoint and newer plots up in Al Qazzaz. In the older parts the large American cockroach comes up from manholes and drain openings that run downhill on the slope, and it needs treating at that source rather than only inside the flat where you meet it.

Appliance heat

Furnished kitchens here pack a fridge and a water heater into a tight space, and the warmth off their motors makes a sheltered pocket where cockroaches lay out of sight.

The gap behind the fridge

In units whose occupants keep changing, the gap behind the fridge is rarely cleaned, so grease and warmth build up and it becomes the single best hiding place in the flat.

Water before food

In Makkah's dry air on the slope, cockroaches look for water first, gathering around a dripping heater, the air conditioning run off and the bathroom drain before they ever head for the kitchen.

What you see at night

Questions about this district

There is a restaurant below my flat. Does that matter?

Yes, and on the old road it is often the real source. We treat your flat and trace the shared pipework the cockroaches use to climb from the restaurant's store room, and we advise treating the premises itself so the problem does not simply return from below.

I let a furnished flat to pilgrims. How do I keep it clear?

With guests changing over, cockroaches keep arriving in luggage. We place a lasting bait through the kitchen and bathroom, seal the pipe entries and the gaps behind appliances, and a quick check between bookings is worth doing to catch any return early before the next guest arrives.

My neighbour sprayed and now they have come to me. Why?

In the tightly packed As Salamah blocks, cockroaches flee a treated unit through pipework and openings into the neighbours. The answer is to treat together, or at least to seal the shared entries between you, otherwise they simply move back and forth between the two flats.

Can second hand furniture bring them in?

Often. German cockroach eggs travel in the seams of sofas, in drawers and in older appliances, exactly the sort of pieces used to furnish visitor flats. Inspect anything you bring in, and tell us about it so we can concentrate the treatment on those first hiding places before they spread.

I moved into a new building in Al Qazzaz. Why are there roaches already?

A new building does not mean an empty one. They arrive with your own furniture or come up through the new drainage connected to the district network, and they show first wherever there is moisture. We find the way in and treat it before they settle into the kitchen.

They come up out of the bathroom drain. What can I do?

On the As Salamah slope the larger cockroaches travel through the drainage and surface at basins and dry traps. Keep the gully covers shut and the traps topped up with water, while we treat the lines and the ground chambers at the source rather than only where they emerge.
