Cockroach control in Mughammas Makkah

Goods and cartons arrive from those depots, and American cockroaches climb out of warehouse drains and underground tanks, so the nearest home is the first they enter. Why they keep coming back in Mughammas

In Mughammas we notice most reports begin in the ground-floor units and the ones attached to the depots, where cockroaches come in from outside long before they ever show up in an upper kitchen. The method is set out in full on Cockroach control in detail.

The first reason

The warehouse is your neighbour

Here the depots are separated from homes by no more than a wall or a yard. American cockroaches leave their drains and stacked pallets after dark and crawl towards the nearest kitchen. Treating the flat on its own will not hold while the source sits behind the wall.

The second reason

Ground that was never serviced

Many Mughammas buildings went up on raw land before the networks reached them, so drainage runs to tanks and soakaways that seep into sandy soil. Those damp tanks are the American cockroach's route up into the ground-floor bathrooms, which is why the fix has to reach below the flat.

The third reason

New build, new gaps

New construction means pipework only just run and openings around basins and sinks not yet sealed. The German cockroach rides in inside cartons from the depots and settles into those warm gaps, breeding quietly before anyone in a freshly occupied unit notices a single one.

Before treatment

The species and the place decide the method

Much of Mughammas is still undeveloped land, and many of its newer buildings drain to underground tanks and soakaways rather than a finished sewer network. In the sandy ground beside the wadi, a damp tank is ideal shelter for the American cockroach.

Climbs up from warehouse drains and the underground tanks near the wadi. Larger, and it surfaces in bathrooms and ground-floor units well before it reaches the upper storeys.

Appliance heat

The fridge motor and the oven give a steady warmth the open ground outside cannot hold at night, so cockroaches gather behind the appliances in summer and winter alike.

The narrow gap behind the fridge is dark, warm and damp, and in these new units it is the first place a cockroach settles before spreading to the rest of the kitchen.

Water before food

A cockroach can go days without food but not without water, so it collects at a leaking sink trap or the base of the heater far more than around crumbs.

What you see at night

The one that crosses the floor after you switch off the light is one of many hidden in the cracks, and seeing them by day means the harbourage is full and pushing them out.

We work through the kitchen, the bathrooms and the drain runs, and establish the species, the harbourage points and the moisture keeping them there.

Gel bait into joints and cracks, targeted spray where it is warranted, and dust in the dry voids behind appliances.

We point out the gaps, the drain entries and anything needing a plumber, because exclusion does more to stop a return than repeating the spray.

Questions about this district

Does the warehouse next door bring cockroaches into my home?

Often, yes, in Mughammas. Warehouse drains and stacked goods are breeding ground for the American cockroach, and from there it crawls after dark to the nearest dwelling. So we inspect the boundary between store and building, not the kitchen alone, and treat the crossing points.

We just moved into a new building, so why cockroaches already?

New does not mean empty. The openings around freshly run pipework stay open until they are sealed, and the German cockroach can arrive inside furniture or in cartons brought from the depots. We find the entry point and close it once the treatment is done.

Does the wadi and its seasonal water affect cockroaches?

The moisture that lingers in the sandy soil and around the underground tanks after the wadi runs gives the American cockroach the water it lives on. We focus on ground-level moisture and the lower-floor drains far more than on the kitchen itself.

We receive boxes and goods from the depots, do they carry cockroaches?

Corrugated cardboard hides German cockroach eggs in its flutes, and warehouse temperatures keep them alive. Check boxes at the door, and break down cardboard as soon as it is empty rather than storing it under the sink, since here that is what moves an infestation most.

We live in a ground-floor unit on open land, do they come in from outside?

Yes. A ground-floor unit up against raw land and the depots is the most exposed. The American cockroach comes in under door thresholds, through air-conditioning runs and pipe penetrations. We treat the outer perimeter and the base course, not just the inside of the unit.

Our building drains to an underground tank, not a sewer, does that matter?

It matters a great deal. The underground tank and its vents are a permanent harbourage for the American cockroach, and from there it climbs the pipework into the bathrooms. We treat the tank openings and the drain lines and advise sealing the covers so the climb does not resume.
