Night survey and perimeter inspection

We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

What is different about Al Utaybiyah Sub-Municipality

Al Utaybiyah sub municipality covers the old districts north of the Grand Mosque: the hillside quarters of Al Hajun, Al Utaybiyah and Al Bayban, Al Zahir and Al Shuhada at the northern entrance, and the newer Al Zahra, Al Diyafah and An Nuzhah westward. Its building stock is among the oldest in Makkah, stone houses on the hills, packed apartment blocks and sewers decades old, threaded with crowded markets like the Utaybiyah souq and furnished flats that fill in the pilgrim seasons. Wadi Al Zahir and Wadi Al Tanim carry storm water through it, and industrial workshops line Hajj Street.

Questions about this district

Do the scorpions in Al Bayban come from the hill behind or from old neighbouring houses?

Both happen. Scorpions come from the hill behind the quarter through vacant land, and they arrive from neighbouring old houses through shared gaps. Treatment targets both entry points by sealing from outside and inside together.

Does the high humidity from the hill and groundwater make treatment less effective?

High moisture does not reduce how well the pesticide works but it does provide the scorpion with ideal living conditions. One or two routine treatments per year is sufficient if we seal the foundations and gaps properly.

If I repair my old house foundation will scorpions stop entering from underground?

Foundation repair helps greatly but it requires coordinated effort across the quarter. If you repair your house alone whilst neighbours do not repair theirs, scorpions will continue to move through the shared foundations between you.

Is treating my single house enough or must the whole quarter be treated?

Treating your house reduces sightings but does not stop them while the shared gaps with neighbours remain open. Coordinating treatment with your neighbours doubles the benefit.

How soon after treatment do I need a second visit given the high humidity here?

In Al Bayban because humidity is permanent, we recommend treatment every six months or sooner if scorpions reappear. Regular inspection helps more than waiting for an outbreak.

Do the old abandoned wells scattered through the quarter shelter scorpions or are they sealed?

Some wells are sealed but others are open or have narrow openings. Open wells are a continuous scorpion source. If a well near your house is open, tell us so we can treat it or at least focus on sealing the gaps around it.
