We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

The Umm Al Salam sub municipality covers the east and south east of Jeddah along the Old Makkah Road and the Haramain Road. It pairs recently planned districts such as Al Wahah, Al Nakhil and Al Shuruq with popular districts that grew outside formal planning, including Al Harazat, Al Mahamid and Umm Al Salam. The older areas have ageing drainage, unpaved streets and vacant plots where building waste collects, conditions that suit rodents, cockroaches and ants. The newer areas are ringed by half built subdivisions and open excavations.

Questions about this district

Are shops and restaurants in Al Nakhil the main insect source attracting scorpions?

Yes, a primary one. But Al Nakhil Park also supplies abundant insects from watered turf and night lighting. Treating a villa or flat alone may not solve the problem when park insects are constantly drawn in.

Is an upper flat protected if there is an active shop below it?

No, pipes and shared walls provide direct routes. Scorpions from the park or the shop below can reach any floor, and flat treatment alone will not stop them.
