Treating only the flat above leaves the shop open, and scorpions continue to enter. Treatment must cover the shop, the stair and the gaps they share, or the flat remains exposed.

We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

Questions about this district

Does treating my flat protect me if the ground shop below is untreated?

No. An untreated ground shop remains the source of insects and scorpions above it. The shop and flat must be treated together, or at minimum the shared passages, stair and gaps between them must be sealed and treated.

Why do scorpions appear on upper floors when they are ground dwelling creatures?

The scorpion follows insects upward. Ground shops feed those insects by food and moisture. The scorpion climbs walls, wires, pipes and stairs seeking insects and the darkness and damp above, reaching flats its prey has reached first.

Is closing and cleaning the shop enough to protect the flat above it?

Closure and cleaning reduce insects but do not stop existing scorpions. A closed shop remains open underneath and at its gaps. Chemical treatment of the shop and shared areas is essential to protect the flats.

Does traffic from the terminal and ring road worsen the scorpion problem?

Yes. Movement, dust and goods from the terminal bring insects and scorpions. Treatment in this district focuses on shop and flat entry points and must account for seasonal traffic peaks and ongoing construction movement.

Is it better to treat before moving into a new flat or after?

Before moving in is better. An empty flat allows complete treatment of every gap and corner. After occupancy, treatment takes longer and may miss gaps hidden by new furniture and belongings, leaving harbourage behind.

How often must Al Ukayshiyah be treated because of its commercial and industrial location?
