The first reason

Stacked building materials and open foundation pits

The district is still under active construction, with sand, blocks and reinforcing steel piled between houses and foundations dug but not yet completed. These spaces provide ideal shelter from sun and heat, where the scorpion spends the day, emerging at night to forage for food in the nearby houses.

The second reason

Wide gaps between new houses on empty plots

Each new house stands isolated on its plot before the district fills in, and the gaps between houses are large and bare. Scorpions use these voids as safe highways to move between food sources, and they cross from one district to another using them as corridors.

The third reason

The new drainage network is still incomplete

New sewers are still being installed and pipes remain open in places and channels are not fully covered. Moisture collecting around these pipes creates ideal conditions for small insects, which in turn attract scorpions hunting for food on their way into the houses.

The district lies within the old Al Karantina quarantine area, the soil was previously water-logged and drainage works are not yet complete across all parts of the scheme.

Night survey and perimeter inspection

We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

Is treating the inside of my house enough while the district is still under construction?

No, because scorpions keep entering from outside. The exterior and the gaps between houses must be treated first to reduce the numbers entering.

What should I do if an open foundation pit sits next to my new house?

Stay away from it and tell us where it is. An open pit is ideal shelter for scorpions, and treating and covering it is essential to protect the neighbouring house.

Will completing the drainage network reduce the scorpion problem?

Yes, because moisture from open drains attracts small insects and the scorpions hunting them. Completed drainage will cut moisture and make the environment less attractive to scorpions.

How often should my house be treated while construction continues in the area?

Initial treatment lasts several months, but because gaps and building work continue, periodic follow up treatment is recommended until the district is finished.

Is clearing the gaps and surrounding area enough to stop scorpions entering?

Clearing helps but is not enough. The scorpion needs only a small crevice, and chemical treatment is necessary to eliminate scorpions already present.
