What survives of the old Qararat Al Madha houses sometimes stands right beside a building finished under the Rua Al Haram project, so old timber joints sit next to fresh plasterboard, and each material hides bed bugs differently, which changes how the inspection is done house by house.

Vacant land and furniture still settling in

The vacant plots between homes mean building crews and delivery trucks pass through constantly, and new furniture often arrives before a room is finished, sitting in an open hallway for days before it is set up, which changes the order an inspection follows compared with a fully settled street.

The third reason

Old thresholds and mashrabiya beside new concrete

Some of the houses left standing near Masjid Al Rayah and Masjid Al Jinn still keep deep wooden thresholds and old mashrabiya screens, while the block facing them across the same street is brand new concrete without any of that joinery, so the hiding places differ from one house to the next.

Beds left over from the old Qararat Al Madha houses are usually hand nailed timber, while frames in the new blocks arrive flat packed, and each kind opens up differently for a check.

Behind the headboard in a new block the plaster can still be slightly damp, while an older surviving house has a mud brick wall that needs a closer look at every crack.

What the bedding shows

Dust blown in from the building plots nearby can settle on the sheets and mask what bed bugs leave behind, so we check the bedding under direct light rather than in a dim room.

Majlis seating in the newer houses is often upholstered furniture delivered only recently from a showroom, and we still check the stitching before it is used for the first time.

Furniture from houses cleared for the Rua Al Haram project sometimes moves in with relatives elsewhere in the district, so we check it separately before it joins the household's own bedding.

How we work

Inspect and map the spread

We strip the bed and work through the mattress and base seams, the frame joints, the headboard and the skirting, then check the upholstered furniture and the neighbouring rooms to see how far it has gone.

Laundry, heat and steam

Bedding is bagged and sealed inside the room, then washed and dried hot. Steam runs along the seams and edges, because heat reaches the cemented eggs that a liquid never will.

Targeted, non-repellent application

A non-repellent product goes onto the harbourage itself, with a dust into voids and screw holes. We do not use a repellent aerosol, because it drives the insect deeper into the wall and into the next room.

Monitoring and the follow-up visit

A sealed encasement goes onto the mattress and the base, with monitors under the bed legs, then we return once the remaining eggs have hatched and re-treat anything still active.

This means most of the bedding in the area is recently moved rather than long settled, so the check leans on items just brought from storage or an old house before they join the new furniture.

Questions about this district

Our new mattresses are still wrapped in a room that isn't finished yet, do they need checking?

Yes. Even a mattress still in its factory wrap may have travelled on a lorry that carried furniture from other houses beforehand, so we check the wrapping and the seam before it is opened in its final room.

We leave furniture on the vacant plot for hours before bringing it inside, is that enough?

No. Sitting in open air and dust on a vacant plot does not kill bed bugs or their eggs, and ordinary outdoor heat is not enough either, so the furniture still needs checking before it comes into the room.

We keep old furniture by the skip on the vacant plot for a week before it's collected, is that risky?

Furniture left beside a skip stays a risk for as long as it sits there, since bed bugs can move to nearby bedding or someone may take it away to reuse, so we recommend checking it or clearing it quickly rather than leaving it for a full week.

Relatives from outside Makkah stay one night for a burial at Al Mualla Cemetery, does their bedding need checking?

Yes. Even one night is enough for bed bugs to move in if they are already in a bag or in clothing, especially if the relatives came from a hotel or another temporary stay just before arriving at your house.

Scaffolding from the building next door is touching our old house wall, can bed bugs cross through it?

Bed bugs cannot fly and will not travel across metal scaffolding on their own, they need direct contact with an infested mattress or piece of furniture, but we still check the wall the scaffolding is resting against to be sure.

Our new wall cupboards still smell of fresh paint, should we delay the check?

There's no need to delay. Paint smell does not stop the check or hide signs of bed bugs, we simply air the cupboard out for a day beforehand so the smell settles down while the work is being done.
