The first reason

Tightly packed buildings and roofs nearly touching

The space between two adjacent buildings may be less than a metre. Pigeons hop easily from roof to roof. Roofs vary in height, creating multiple ledges and perching points. The birds move across the whole block as one connected habitat.

The second reason

Narrow streets and densely packed shops

The narrow street means that dropped food from shops and markets is very close to the roofs above. The pigeon finds its daily meals on the pavement and sleeps on the roof directly above the shop.

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

Questions about this district

There are shops directly beneath our flat. Is that the only reason pigeons appear on our balcony?

Yes, it is fundamental. Scraps from the shops provide daily food and the pigeon sleeps on the roof directly above. A flat above shops with a tight ledge and easy roof access is ideal for pigeons.

The gap between our building and the next one is very narrow. Does the pigeon use it to get to our roof?

The narrow gap is a safe passage for the bird. It hops between roofs easily, and the narrow space itself provides wind shelter. The pigeon nests in the gap or on the roof just beyond it.

Do the irregular old stones in the walls give pigeons shelter without any air conditioning boxes?

Absolutely. Irregular masonry and old cracks provide natural cavities that are perfectly suitable for nesting. The pigeon does not need external air conditioning equipment; any old crack will serve.

A pigeon entered the flat through a hole in the wall. How do I seal it without major repair work?

Strong metal mesh and wire can temporarily block the opening, but permanent sealing requires filling the cavity with caulk or foam. Old buildings may have many such openings hidden by age.

I counted five nests on the shared roof. Should I deal with them on my own?

No. Nests on a shared roof are a collective responsibility. It is far better to co-ordinate with other flat owners and the adjacent buildings. The pigeons may return from the neighbouring blocks.

Does the noise from the nearby port bother the pigeons or have they adapted to it?

Pigeons adapt to loud noise very quickly if food and shelter are reliable. The port brings shifting bird populations, but secure, well-fed roosts keep them in place.
