The first reason

Protection of gold and ornament stock

The Kandarah Souq is known for gold and jewellery, and pigeons on shop roofs and shutters contaminate stock with droppings. We remove nests directly above gold and antique shops, fit mesh to openings around the storefront, and clean all old pigeon deposits from the roof so contamination does not spread to the merchandise below.

Hotel ledges and open balconies

The modest hotels in Al Kandarah have numerous balconies and open roofscapes where pigeons nest in corners and under metal soffits. We seal every balcony opening and fit spikes to railings where possible, with mesh around air conditioning units and their vents.

Restaurant heat and scent rising from below

Restaurants and bakeries on the ground floor emit aromas that draw pigeons from a distance, and the roofs of these premises shelter pigeons during closing hours. We focus on sealing the roof from entry and preventing pigeons from using the heat and scent rising through the ventilation shaft.

The mix of shops, restaurants and crowded street markets on King Fahd Road and Old Makkah Road keeps food waste accessible to birds all day. Pigeons move easily between Al Kandarah and the adjoining commercial quarters of East Baghdadiyah, Al Sabil and Al Fayha.

Ledge width

Hotel and shop ledges in old Al Kandarah may be weak coral stone or aged brick, so we use suspended mesh panels with robust metal brackets rather than direct fastening to the ledge.

Hotel air conditioning units cover every facade and roofline, and pigeons perch on them easily. We fit mesh below each unit and around the support pipe or pole.

How we work

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

Questions about this district

Does fitting mesh over a gold shop shutter damage the frontage?

Fine mesh under a protective shutter is invisible from the street and does not affect the storefront. We choose mesh colour to match the facade and size to fit the opening, using minimal fastening methods to minimise any disturbance.

I run a hotel with nesting birds; how often do we need to clean?

One clean after nest removal is sufficient if we seal every entry point. After fitting deterrents the pigeons do not return, so repeated cleaning is not needed unless we miss a ledge or opening.

The Kandarah Souq building is very old; will the ledge hold the spikes?

We test the ledge first. If it is weak or crumbling we use suspended mesh panels with strong metal brackets that anchor to the wall structure, not to the ledge itself.

In the hotel, do we need daily cleaning of rooftop droppings?

After nest removal, initial cleaning and parasite treatment nothing accumulates. Routine cleaning of floor areas and hallways is sufficient for hotel operations.

Should we fit the deterrent on the hotel roof or on the shop facade below?

Both places. We fit spikes and mesh on the hotel roof ledges and balconies from above, and on storefronts and shutters from below, matching deterrent placement to where the birds are actually roosting.

Pigeon droppings drip onto the shop windows below the hotel, how do we stop it?

We remove all nests and deposits from the hotel roof and seal all openings. If needed we fit angled metal panels or gutters on the roof edge to shed moisture away from the facades below.
