The first reason

Decorated wooden screens and open-bottomed rawashin

Wooden rawashin open at the base offer pigeons safe shelter from weather and predators. Removing nests from inside aged wood risks weakening the structure. Deterrents are fitted to the stone ledge below the rasheen, never to the timber itself, so the ornamental screens stay intact.

The second reason

Historic landmarks and mosques nearby

The quarter surrounds Banaja House, Ribat Al Khunji and the Qishla, with ancient mosques within it. Pigeons arrive from these landmarks and settle on adjacent buildings. Treatment focuses on ledges rather than roof penetrations to preserve the district's architectural character.

Tightly packed buildings in narrow lanes

The cramped spacing between old houses lets pigeons move easily from roof to roof. Ledge access occurs only through narrow alleys, limiting reach. Neighbour coordination is essential because birds transfer readily between the adjoining buildings.

The old quarter holds closely-set historic houses with wide ledges, ornamental wooden screens and passages barely wider than a man. Proximity to the sea brings humidity, and the aged stonework and woodwork provide ideal nesting conditions for pigeons and parasites.

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

Questions about this district

Will fitting deterrents damage the old wooden screens and frames?

Deterrents sit only on the upper stone ledge, never on the timber rasheen. We use non-acidic materials that do not corrode wood. The screens stay protected because deterrents work by making the ledge itself uncomfortable for perching.

Nests were inside the alleys between buildings. How do you reach them?

The narrow lanes give direct access to roof level. We remove nests from inside the alley and treat the area for parasites and debris. Deterrents then go on every ledge facing into the passage.

My neighbour refuses to treat their building ledge. Will that affect me?

Pigeons move freely between touching ledges, so one untreated building weakens the whole block's protection. We recommend neighbours coordinate treatment timing to achieve better results across the shared roofscape.

Will birds come back after we remove the nests from the alleys?

Nests alone do not control the problem. Pigeons return to the same ledge unless deterrents are in place. Nest removal, parasite treatment and ledge fitting together stop them from resettling.

The wooden balconies are very old and crumbling. Does treatment need new timber?

No timber replacement is required. Deterrents go on the stone ledge only. If the woodwork is very weak, we avoid putting pressure on it during installation.

Is treatment safe for residents living in these historic buildings?

Work is outdoors only, on ledges and facades. We do not enter homes. The products used are approved for occupied spaces and present no hazard to the household.
