Why they keep coming back in Al Rawabi

In the older southern part along the old Makkah Road, we tend to find the large American cockroach coming up from the drains, while in the newer northern blocks it is the German cockroach that dominates the kitchens. The method is set out in full on the full Cockroach control page.

The first reason

A new north and an older south

The apartment blocks in the northern half are recent, with sealed, modern pipework. The southern half on the old Makkah Road is older, its drains wider at the joints, and that is where the American cockroach climbs up from below. So we start by reading the age of the building, not the kitchen alone.

The shop beneath the flat

When your flat sits above or beside a commercial centre, its restaurant or grocery can be the real source of the German cockroach, not your kitchen. We trace the route from the unit downstairs to your flat, because otherwise whatever we clear simply returns from where it began.

Blocks packed along the road

Along Bin Laden Road the apartment blocks stand close together, flats stacked above one another on shared risers. Cockroaches move between floors through the vertical service ducts, so treating a single flat while the neighbours do nothing leaves the insect an open corridor to come back through.

The commercial centres dotted between the apartment blocks house restaurant kitchens and food shops. Their drains and stores are a standing reservoir for the German cockroach, which travels up pipes and rides in on goods and bags to the flats above and around them.

Appliance heat

Behind the fridge and oven in a narrow flat kitchen the warmth stays constant, so cockroaches gather near the motor and breed well out of sight.

Flat kitchens here are tight, and the gap between the fridge and the wall is dark, warm and close to water. In Al Rawabi flats it is the first place we check.

Water before food

A cockroach can go without food far longer than without water, so leaking kitchen and bathroom joints and air-conditioner run-off matter, and these are commoner in the older southern pipework.

What you see at night

What you see in the kitchen at night is a fraction; the rest are hidden in the cracks. Seeing even one by day in your block usually means numbers high enough to push them out.

Questions about this district

My flat is above a commercial centre. Could the restaurant be the source?

Very often, yes. The restaurant and grocery kitchens in the commercial centres are ideal for the German cockroach, and from there it climbs up through pipes and gaps into the flats above. So we check the points where the unit connects to yours, not only your own kitchen.

My building is in the older southern part. Does that change things?

Yes. The buildings on the old Makkah Road are older, and their drains are wider at the joints, so the big American cockroach comes up from the manholes and bathrooms. Here we focus on drain covers and pipe openings more than on the kitchen itself.

A neighbour in my block treated only his flat. Is that enough?

Often not. In Al Rawabi's tightly packed blocks the flats share pipes and vertical ducts, so the cockroaches simply flee the treated flat into the one next door. The effect lasts far longer when the connected units are treated together, or the routes between them are sealed.

I moved into a new block in the north. Why do I already have them?

A new building is not an empty one. They usually arrive with second-hand furniture, moving boxes, or from the shops in the nearby commercial centre. We check the kitchen, the new appliances and the entry points first, to cut things off before the population builds.

Does the building's bin room draw them in?

Yes. The shared bin store and the basement car park in these blocks are a steady source of moisture and food, and from there cockroaches spread up the stairwells and light wells. We treat these communal areas alongside your flat so no pocket is left feeding the building.

The district mixes shops and homes. Will they always come back?

The risk stays while an active commercial source sits nearby, but that does not mean a permanent infestation. By sealing the entry points around your flat, treating the harbourage gaps, and returning for a follow-up visit, we close off the route they use to travel from the unit to you.
