Questions about this district

There is a shop below my flat on Quraysh. Is that the cause?

Usually, yes. Restaurant and bakery kitchens are a constant supply of food and warmth, and the cockroaches climb from them into the flats through drain runs and the openings around pipework. We treat your flat, seal the crossing points from below, and advise following up on the shop itself.

I am in a garden villa near Prince Sultan Road. Where do the big roaches come from?

The large American cockroach lives in drainage manholes and damp floors, and comes up at night from the garden and the storm channels into the ground-floor bathrooms and kitchen. We treat the manholes and outside openings and set a barrier at the villa's entry points, rather than only spraying indoors.

My neighbour sprayed his flat and the roaches moved to mine. What now?

This is common in the Al Salamah blocks. Spraying one flat pushes the German cockroach along the vertical risers to the neighbours instead of killing it. The answer is baiting the adjoining units at the same time and treating the shared riser, not scattered spraying floor by floor.

Do cockroaches travel between floors in a residential block?

Yes, along the drain and supply pipes that run vertically behind the kitchens and bathrooms. That is why we inspect the whole service stack and place bait where it passes each floor, so they cannot simply return from a unit that was never treated.

I brought second-hand furniture into my flat. Can it carry roaches?

Used furniture and appliances are one of the commonest ways the German cockroach and its egg cases enter an Al Salamah flat, fridges, microwaves and kitchen drawers especially. Check the cracks and hinges before you bring a piece in, and tell us so we can focus the inspection on it.

My home is close to the Al Yamamah restaurants. Does that affect me?

Being next to a row of restaurants raises the cockroach pressure on the buildings around them, as they move at night looking for a cooler harbourage. We concentrate on sealing the doors, windows and outside openings nearest the food source to cut down what reaches you.
