Blocks in Al Zahra share their pipework and vertical service ducts, so cockroaches pass from one kitchen to the one above through the gaps around the pipes. That is why we treat the shared crossing points rather than your kitchen alone: seal only your flat and the colony returns from the unit next door.

Sitting between two arterial roads means the ground floors here are given over to shops and food premises, with older sewer lines beneath them. That layout pushes the large American cockroach up from manholes and inspection chambers into the flats above.

Appliance heat

The heat off a fridge motor or water heater in these closed kitchens gives a steady warmth that draws cockroaches to nest beside it, more so in the district's crowded flats.

The tight gap behind the fridge, pushed flat against the wall in Al Zahra's small kitchens, is a warm dark space that is rarely cleaned, so it becomes the colony's first harbourage.

Water before food

Cockroaches look for water before food, and the damp around kitchen sinks and bathrooms is enough in Makkah's hot summer, so we dry out the leaks and standing water first.

What you see at night

One cockroach on the kitchen wall at night means a crowded harbourage close by, because what shows in the dark is only a fraction of a colony hidden through the day.

Questions about this district

My neighbour treated their flat and now they are in mine. Why?

When a flat is treated, the cockroaches flee the spray through the shared pipework and head for the nearest shelter, which can be yours. The fix is to treat the crossing points between the two units rather than your flat alone, and it helps to coordinate with the neighbour.

There are food shops on the ground floor of my block. Does that reach me?

Yes. The shop kitchens, their waste and their drains on the ground floor are a steady food source, and cockroaches climb from there into the flats after dark through the pipework and stairwells. We check those routes and treat the source below, not the flat on its own.

I let my flat to Umrah visitors. How do I keep it clear between guests?

Cockroaches usually arrive with incoming luggage and furniture rather than from the building itself. We place long-lasting bait at the kitchen entry points and seal the cracks, and we suggest a quick check of the kitchen and bathroom between one guest and the next to catch anything newly carried in.

Do they travel through the drainage risers between floors?

Yes. The vertical drainage and ventilation runs in Al Zahra's blocks are an open road that cockroaches use to move between flats. We treat and seal the openings where the pipes pass through, because leaving a single gap is enough for the infestation to return.

The flat next to mine is empty most of the year. Is that a risk?

It can be. An empty unit is a quiet place for cockroaches to breed undisturbed, and they then spread towards your flat in search of water and food. We treat the shared crossing points between the two, and it is worth asking the building management to have the vacant flat checked.

Our block sits on a main road with a large sewer. Does that matter?

Yes. The larger sewers and manholes under the main roads are a favoured home for the big American cockroach, which climbs up through inspection chambers and floor drains into the ground floors. We treat the entry points from the drainage and fit barriers at the gullies.
