The narrow alleyways in the old town block sun and wind all day, keeping humidity high constantly. Fleas live in this wet dark environment year round without seasonality. Stray animals roam these lanes searching for food and water, carrying fleas that enter homes directly from the street.

Ancient networks and continuous leakage

Drainage and water networks are very old in the district, and continuous leakage from pipes keeps soil around foundations and streets damp always. High moisture harbours fleas from rats and animals living under foundations. Treating the home alone is insufficient because the external source is continuous.

The third reason

Close to sea, harbour and the Arbaeen lagoon

The central district is very close to the sea, the Islamic Port and the Arbaeen lagoon, and sea humidity is very high all year. Food from fish waste, restaurants and crowded markets provides ideal flea habitat. Stray animals around the harbour and markets carry very heavy flea loads.

A central Jeddah district around the Eve Cemetery (Maqbarat Ummina Hawwa), the city's oldest burial ground, situated between Bab Makkah, Al Kandarah and Makkah Road on the landward side of the old town. Older apartment buildings occupy a tight street grid with Al Matar Street and Khalid ibn Al Walid Street close by.

How we work

Inspect and confirm

We confirm it is fleas rather than another biting insect, and fix the animal's sleeping points, its routes and the shaded ground outside. Where there is no animal in the house, we look for the host they came from.

Treat the floors and soft furnishings

A residual with an insect growth regulator, worked into the carpet base, the floor and wall junction and the edges under furniture. The regulator stops a larva becoming an adult, which is what breaks the cycle.

The host and the shade outside

We treat the shaded ground and the outdoor lying spots, and we agree with you that the animal's veterinary treatment happens on the same day, because any host left out of the job re-seeds the floor.

Vacuuming, then the follow-up visit

Repeated vacuuming vibrates the floor and draws the pupae out onto a treated surface. We come back about two weeks later to take the emerged generation before it lays.

Questions about this district

Our stone house is very old and walls are damp all the time. Will treatment fix it?

Treatment kills present fleas but damp walls harbour new ones quickly. Improving ventilation and reducing moisture is part of the solution, and repeated treatment may be necessary.

Stray animals enter our home from the street. How do we stop them?

Animals enter through open doors, windows and cracks. Sealing openings and repairing wall cracks is essential. Even after treatment, new animals may enter if the door is not sealed.

Water seeps through our walls. Does this worsen fleas?

Yes, leakage keeps walls and floors damp always and harbours many fleas. Fixing the leak first and then treating gives better results. Seeping water provides fleas with constant drink.

Two months after treatment fleas returned even though we cleaned thoroughly.

Cleaning removes living fleas but cocoons in carpet and walls remain and emerge after two weeks. A second treatment two weeks after the first kills the emerging generation. New animals from the street may also bring fresh fleas.

Is the sea itself a source of fleas?

The sea is not a direct source, but animals around the harbour and fish market carry heavy flea loads. Nearness to the sea increases humidity and that increases fleas.

Al Hindawiyah is a neighbouring district with many fleas. Do they come to us?

Neighbouring districts may be a source if animals move between them. But the district itself, the tight streets and the high humidity are the largest flea source in Al Ammariyah.
