The first reason

New villas beside old houses on the same street

Umm Al Salam mixes new villas with very old houses on the same street. The new villa has modern air conditioner drainage, but water drips onto open ground beside it. The old house next to it has no modern drainage, and water stays in the gaps. Mosquitoes move freely between them.

The second reason

Demolished land and open voids

When informal settlement is cleared, it leaves open ground and deep black voids. These voids fill with rainwater and runoff and hold it for weeks. Mosquitoes lay eggs in vast numbers in these spaces. The cleared ground is a temporary breeding site that can hold water longer than any house.

The narrow road where trucks pass towards Makkah keeps the dust moist all the time. Water from trucks and street washing settles on the sides. Narrow gaps between new villas and old houses trap this water, and it persists in the shade.

The district sits on the truck route towards Makkah where sea humidity meets the moisture from the hills. Residential streets are low-lying and the cleared land leaves open spaces and new foundation pits that fill with water.

Inspect and map the water

We walk the perimeter, the roof, the garden, the meter chambers and the condensate runs, record everything that holds water, and read the species from the breeding site and the time of biting.

Remove the water that can go

Empty, invert, cover: saucers, containers, old tyres and roof gullies. Every point that disappears is a treatment that never needs repeating.

Larval treatment, then the resting surfaces

Water that cannot be drained is treated so the larva never completes, then a residual goes under planting, beneath outdoor furniture and along low shaded walls.

The follow-up visit

We come back once the generation that was in the water on the first visit has completed, review every point we recorded and re-treat where needed.

Questions about this district

Our new villa is next to open demolition land. Does that breed mosquitoes?

Yes. Open ground after demolition fills with rainwater and runoff and holds it. Mosquitoes lay millions of eggs there. Water from your air conditioner drainage drips onto the open ground and makes it worse.

New drainage in our villa means no mosquitoes, surely?

Your villa may be fine, but the villa next to you may be old with old drainage. Water and mosquitoes move from villa to villa. Treatment covers all neighbouring villas and the ground between them.

The street is wide but water pools in the gaps between it and the houses. Should we clear them?

Clearing helps temporarily, but these gaps are very narrow and hard to keep clear. Chemical treatment is the only lasting solution.

Does the construction site next to the district increase mosquitoes in Umm Al Salam?

Yes. Construction leaves open pits, water and mud. Runoff collects water in these pits. Mosquitoes breed there in vast numbers and then spread into your homes.

The health centre is next to our district. Is that a special mosquito source?

The health centre has bathrooms and much water drainage. If the drainage is old or blocked, it becomes a mosquito source. Treatment around the health centre is important.

Umm Al Salam is old and new at the same time. Is treatment different here?

Yes. Treatment must cover new villas with modern drainage, old houses with old drainage, and the open gaps between them all in one plan.
