The buildings are very old indeed, their walls damp from the ground up, pressed so tightly together they support one another literally. Cracks in the party walls widen year on year. Insects migrate between buildings through these cracks and voids effortlessly.

The second reason

Ancient lanes and permanent darkness

The lanes between buildings are extremely narrow and sunless, because the blocks are so tall that daylight never enters them. The shadow, humidity and stagnant air create the perfect breeding ground for cockroaches and black ants.

The third reason

Ancient drains and collapsed pipes

The main drain beneath Ibrahim Al Khalil Street is very old and has collapsed in many places. The subsidence voids and seepage points have created a network of insect tunnels beneath the street and the buildings.

Al Misfalah sub municipality runs downhill from the south of the Grand Mosque through Al Misfalah, Kudai and Al Rawabi to Al Taqwa, Al Hindawiyah, Al Khalidiyah and Al Rusayfah at the third ring road. The northern end is old apartment blocks and pilgrim hotels with restaurants along Ibrahim Al Khalil Street and the huge coach parks at Kudai. The south and west are dense popular districts with countless small shops and unplanned hillside housing, some of it already cleared for redevelopment, giving way to orderly land grant schemes in Al Rusayfah beside the railway station.

Questions about this district

Why are restaurants in Al Misfalah harder to treat than elsewhere?

Because the blocks are pressed together and the restaurants are pressed against the blocks from every side. There is no real party wall isolation and no genuine outside windows. Insects arrive from every direction simultaneously.

Does wall damp keep insects alive longer here?

Yes, constant moisture supplies the water insects need. Cockroaches live longer in damp and dark places, and this is exactly what they find here.

Should we inspect the second and third floors of the building?

Yes, especially if there are unoccupied flats. Insects climb and descend through cracks and drain pipes, and we may find them on the second floor too.

Does the old drain beneath the street cause permanent problems?

Yes, the collapses and seepage have created voids beneath the surface which are safe refuges for insects and rodents. Treating the visible drains alone is not enough.

Does the permanent darkness in the lanes make the problem worse?

Greatly, because cockroaches love shadow, humidity and stagnant air. These lanes provide all three in abundance.

Is a monthly programme enough for Al Misfalah?
