Why they keep coming back in Al Aziziyah

High residential density multiplies food sources

Al Aziziyah is very dense and restaurants and shops are widespread along Makarona Road, Tahliah Street and Palestine Street. Rats feed on waste from these outlets at night and do not venture far because of the density and shade cast by blocks, settling beneath foundations instead.

Incomplete and ageing networks offer permanent shelter

Drainage and plumbing networks in Al Aziziyah's apartment buildings are old, ageing and leak constantly. Standing water beneath expanded foundations provides permanently damp conditions, the preferred habitat for rat shelter and snakes.

Direct sea humidity raises moisture levels permanently

Al Aziziyah is close to Al Hamra Corniche and sea humidity is very high in its western districts. This constant moisture penetrates foundations and walls, keeping them perpetually damp and attracting rats and geckos.

We work the perimeter, the garden and the service rooms with a torch and a mirror, reading the tracks, the skins and the burrows to establish whether it is still on site and where it came in.

It comes out on a hook and tongs into a closed container and is released away from buildings where that is possible, with no chasing it around a room.

Close the routes, take away the shelter

We treat the rodents and the geckos on the perimeter, then return once that activity has settled to check the sealed points and look for any fresh track.

What is different about Al Aziziyah Sub-Municipality

The Al Aziziyah sub municipality takes in the established heart of northern Jeddah, from the Al Hamra corniche on the Red Sea to Al Rehab east of King Abdullah Road. Its buildings date back decades, mostly mid rise apartment blocks over shops and closely packed restaurants along Makarona Road, Tahliah Street and Palestine Street, alongside villas and hotel towers near the shore. Sea humidity is high in the western districts, plumbing and drainage in the older blocks are ageing, and food outlets, hospitals and irrigated gardens are everywhere, conditions that favour cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes and rodents throughout the year.

Questions about this district

Are older buildings in Al Aziziyah at higher risk than newer ones?

Much higher. Older blocks on Makarona Road have very ageing drainage networks and foundations that hold water. Newer buildings are better but nearby older ones will affect them.

If I live on the third floor, am I safe from snakes?

No. Snakes climb pipes inside walls and through cracks easily. A third floor flat is not safe if the ground floor is a snake entry point.

Is the popular market in Al Aziziyah responsible for rats?

Yes, it is a primary source. Waste accumulates and draws rats that move directly into blocks standing above it.

Are villas in the numbered sections safer than the blocks?

Villas are at lower risk because they have fewer gaps and are not built over shops. But gaps between villas and nearby blocks may offer passage routes.

How often should I check entry points in my flat in Al Aziziyah?
