Water tank sterilization in Al Shuhada Makkah
Al Shuhada is a congested northern quarter at the Thaniyat Al Bayda pass, hemmed by Jabal Al Barud and Jabal Al Shahid to the west and Wadi Al Tanim to the north. Unplanned housing spreads over fissured rocky ground, and tanks face unique challenges because the ground is unstable and water collection is difficult.
-
Potable-rated materials
Linings and disinfectants cleared for drinking water tanks, not general-purpose products.
-
You get the downtime first
How many hours the tank is out of service, told before we start rather than after we finish.
-
A first-draw flush
We run the first draw off after refilling, and the tank is not handed back until the water runs clear.
-
Ground and roof tanks
Villas, apartment blocks and premises that need a written record of each visit.
Why the job is different in Al Shuhada
The ground is rocky, fissured and unstable, houses are built irregularly over rock faces, and tanks are either hung on roofs or carved into stone, causing frequent leaks and seepage. The method is set out in full on the full Water tank sterilization page.
Tanks carved into fractured rock
Many tanks here are dug directly into stone, and natural fissures leak water from soil and groundwater. Incoming water carries rock particles and clay from deep soil layers.
Ground instability and old quarries
Old quarries around the quarter left voids beneath foundations and tanks. The ground is unstable and minor movement creates new cracks in tanks and buildings.
Deep and contaminated groundwater
Groundwater here is very deep and seeps through rock fissures. Water carries heavy minerals, sediment and clay, making tanks dirty quickly.
The character of Al Shuhada
Historic district: close-set buildings, narrow lanes and ageing services
An unplanned quarter on rough rocky ground means tanks are built irregularly and face unique engineering challenges. Treatment focuses on dealing with seepage and contamination from groundwater and rock fissures, and sterilization must be thorough and comprehensive.
What we read inside the tank before anything starts
An unplanned quarter in the north at Thaniyat Al Bayda, hemmed by mountains and wadis, with scattered houses on rocky ground. It contains traces of old cemeteries linked to the battle of Fakh.
Sediment on the floor
Rock sediment and heavy metals accumulate quickly from groundwater passing through natural rock fissures.
The slime film on the wall
Clay and organic sludge form in carved tanks because humidity is high and water stagnates in rock fissures and voids.
Light and heat
Seepage from natural rock fissures brings contaminants from deep soil and untreated groundwater.
The lining and any cracking
High humidity from groundwater and wet fissures promote bacterial and algal growth on tank walls and floors.
The lid and the openings
Tanks carved in stone may have structural cracks that widen with ground movement and need periodic inspection for structural soundness.
What shows up at the tap
Continuous seepage and contaminated groundwater indicate that sterilization alone is insufficient, and structural repair or tank replacement may be needed.
How we work
-
1
Inspect and record the condition
We open the hatch and work through what the tank is made of and how big it is, how deep the sediment lies, the state of the lining, whether the lid and the overflow seal, and whether there is a crack that has to be repaired before any sterilizing.
-
2
Drain and lift the sediment out
The water goes out, then the silt and sand are lifted off the floor by suction rather than pushed toward the outlet, because pushing them sends them into the house pipework and the heater.
-
3
High pressure wash
Walls, floor, corners and the area around the outlet, until the slime film is completely gone. This is the step that makes the sterilizing after it mean anything.
-
4
Sterilize, rinse, then return to service
The sterilizing agent goes onto the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid and is left for its contact time, then we rinse, refill and run the furthest tap until the whole line is clear.
What water tank sterilization includes
-
A recorded inspection
Material, capacity, sediment depth, the state of the lining, the lid and the overflow, all before any work begins.
-
Draining and sediment removal
The water out, and the silt and sand lifted off the floor instead of being pushed into the outlet and the house pipework.
-
High pressure washing
Walls, corners and around the outlet, until the biofilm that no disinfectant penetrates has gone.
-
Sterilizing the internal surfaces
A sterilizing agent meant for drinking water tanks, applied to the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid, and left for its contact time.
-
Line flush and aftercare
Rinse, refill and a flush from the furthest tap, when the water is usable again, and what to change in the filter afterwards.
-
The next cycle
We agree the right interval for your tank from how it is filled, how much sun it takes and the condition of the lid.
What is different about Al Utaybiyah Sub-Municipality
Al Utaybiyah sub municipality covers the old districts north of the Grand Mosque: the hillside quarters of Al Hajun, Al Utaybiyah and Al Bayban, Al Zahir and Al Shuhada at the northern entrance, and the newer Al Zahra, Al Diyafah and An Nuzhah westward. Its building stock is among the oldest in Makkah, stone houses on the hills, packed apartment blocks and sewers decades old, threaded with crowded markets like the Utaybiyah souq and furnished flats that fill in the pilgrim seasons. Wadi Al Zahir and Wadi Al Tanim carry storm water through it, and industrial workshops line Hajj Street.
Questions about this district
Why do tanks carved into rock leak so much?
Stone has natural fissures and groundwater seeps through them directly. New cracks form due to instability and minor ground movement.
Does tank cleaning solve the leaking problem?
Cleaning and sterilization do not solve the underlying leak. If the leak is from cracks, repair or sealing is needed before sterilization.
What causes the thick mineral sediment in tanks here?
Deep groundwater carries heavy metals and fractured rock transfers mineral particles. Mineral sediment builds up faster than in other quarters.
Can underground tanks be used safely after sterilization?
Yes, but if a known leak exists, it must be repaired first. Then we ensure groundwater does not re-enter after sterilization.
What is the difference between cleaning carved and roof-mounted tanks?
Carved tanks need careful inspection for cracks and seepage. Special equipment may be needed to access and clean the interior.
Do the old cemeteries around the quarter affect water quality?
They may, if groundwater is close to them. Careful inspection and tests determine if there is microbial contamination from burial sites.
How much does water tank sterilization in Al Shuhada cost?
It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Al Shuhada.
