Coach terminals and ihram shops produce food scraps around the clock from pilgrims. Ants do not need to search; they trace straight lines from food stores to the nest and grow rapidly, quickly branching into new areas to maximise access.

Showrooms and storerooms offer warm shelter

Car showrooms and small warehouses sit on old foundations with underslab voids where ants settle and build branching nests. These spaces are humid from air conditioning and pipe leaks, which attract ants further.

The number of shops and offices is large, and ant nests beneath them are interlinked. A single treatment may not reach every branch, because ants expand rapidly from nest to nest via shared floor voids.

Questions about this district

Are ants in commercial coach stations stronger than ants in ordinary flats?

Yes, terminal ants are stronger because food is plentiful and colonies are large. The sheer size of a major colony means stronger resistance to treatment, so we need potent bait and larger quantities.

Why do ants return so quickly to a coach station after spraying?

Ants come back because food is still available and the station is attractive. If the main nest is not destroyed, new foragers emerge from it and return directly to the same spot.

Does thorough cleaning of food scraps significantly reduce ant numbers?

Cleaning reduces ants but does not eliminate them. Without destroying the nest, ants survive and forage for other food sources. However, cleaning makes bait work more effectively.

Do shared pipes between offices and stations complicate ant treatment?

Yes, shared pipes and ventilation ducts let ants move between shops easily. Each shop must be treated separately, then gaps around pipes sealed to prevent cross movement.

How often yearly does an ihram shop need ant treatment?

Once every two months is enough with regular cleaning. During hajj and Umrah seasons, an extra treatment may be needed because crowding increases food waste and ant activity.

Can the coach station be treated alone without treating neighbouring shops?

Treating the station alone may push ants into adjacent shops. It is best to treat all shops and offices at the same time to stop ants from dispersing.
