We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

The Umm Al Salam sub municipality covers the east and south east of Jeddah along the Old Makkah Road and the Haramain Road. It pairs recently planned districts such as Al Wahah, Al Nakhil and Al Shuruq with popular districts that grew outside formal planning, including Al Harazat, Al Mahamid and Umm Al Salam. The older areas have ageing drainage, unpaved streets and vacant plots where building waste collects, conditions that suit rodents, cockroaches and ants. Questions about this district

Do commercial shops and flats above them need treatment separately?

Yes, because the shopkeeper may not want a deterrent visible on his storefront, and the flats above need protection from falling droppings. We agree with both parties on a solution that protects the shop and the homes at the same time.

Do droppings from the high roofs reach down to the ground floor balconies?

Yes, droppings fall from apartment block roofs onto the lower balconies and shops, and they attract tiny biting parasites. The roof must be cleaned and treated before new deterrents are fitted.

Can we fit deterrents to one building without fitting them to the adjacent villa?

Treating one building reduces the problem but does not stop pigeons returning from neighbouring roofs. Covering the whole neighbourhood works best, but you can start with one building and expand the coverage later.

Do the gaps between the apartment block and the neighbouring villa provide shelter?

Yes, the narrow gaps and deep corners between buildings are safe gathering points for the birds. These spaces must be inspected and any openings that allow pigeon entry must be sealed.

Does the water dripping from air conditioners give the pigeons enough to drink all year?

Yes, air conditioning units drip water daily, especially in summer, and that water supply is enough for pigeon flocks. Managing the drip or protecting the area around it makes the roof less attractive.

Do people leaving the shops and cafes throw food that attracts the pigeons?

Yes, scraps and leftovers from the shops and cafes draw the pigeons in, and sometimes other scavenging animals too. Organising waste bins and keeping lids closed reduces the neighbourhood's draw for birds.
