Bird and pigeon control in Al Zahir Makkah

Al Zahir is an old district at Makkah's northern edge on the Madinah road and the Third Ring Road, with apartment buildings and old hotels, mountains and wadis. It houses King Abdulaziz Hospital, the Makkah Museum of Antiquities and Heritage, the Holy Capital Public Library and Al Diyafah Mall. Pigeons nest abundantly on hotel and apartment roofs, and the surrounding mountains provide natural roosts. Control is harder here because the building is old, shared roofs are numerous and pigeons are well established.

  • Targeted, not broadcast

Product goes into cracks and runways, never sprayed across open surfaces.

  • Told before we start

What we will use, where it goes, and what to cover or move before we arrive.

  • A follow-up visit

We return after the first treatment, because what survives it does not show on the day.

  • Homes and businesses

Apartments and villas, and kitchens and stores that need a record of each visit.

Why they keep coming back in Al Zahir

Hotel owners in Al Zahir suffer more than residents because pigeons roost on tall roofs and droppings fall onto guest rooms and building entrances directly. The method is set out in full on Bird and pigeon control in detail.

The first reason

Jabal Al Zahir and Jabal Al Barud are natural pigeon and bird sources

Mountains surrounding the district contain natural fissures and caves that shelter pigeons and wild birds. Birds descend from the hills to hotel and apartment roofs seeking water and resting places.

The second reason

Old building and weak walls limit protection options available

Old stone and cracked cement make anchoring difficult, and weak walls may not safely support heavy mesh or iron spikes fitted to the roof edge.

The third reason

Shared roofs and many openings on old buildings offer pigeon access

A large old hotel has scores of balconies, doors and shafts, and pigeons enter through any exposed opening and nest easily in multiple places.

The building decides which deterrent works

Old densely built district with residential apartment blocks and old hotels, weak stone walls and mountains and wadis closely surrounding the urban area.

A narrow concrete projection on a building facade

Ledge width

Ledge width on the old hotel is very weak stone and cracked cement, so fitting must be careful not to widen existing fractures.

Outdoor condenser units on a building roof

Air conditioning platforms

Air conditioning platforms on the old hotel are large and heavy, and pigeons nest behind them easily in sheltered wide spaces.

The nest itself

Nests on the old hotel are very numerous and pressed against old metal fixtures, requiring careful removal without damaging the metal structure.

The droppings pattern

Droppings stream onto balconies and windows heavily, and collect at the base of facade walls in thick stains.

Openings and shafts

Openings on the old hotel are very numerous and pigeons slip inside through any old hole or gap in the deteriorating walls.

The water tank on the old roof is surrounded by standing pigeons and droppings accumulate on the tank itself and the exposed delivery pipes.

How we work

  1. 1

Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

  2. 2

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

  3. 3

    Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

  4. 4

    The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

What bird and pigeon control includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

    A recorded survey

Every ledge, condenser platform and shaft, photographed, with nesting separated from perching before anything is chosen.

  • A metal floor drain

    Nest removal and drain clearing

Lifted wet rather than swept dry, bagged closed, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    Parasite treatment and sanitising

The nest position treated for ticks and mites, then the surface the droppings sat on sanitised.

  • A gloved hand applying bait into a joint

    Sealing and fitting the deterrents

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire, spikes or wire on narrow projections, and metal mesh across ventilation openings.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    Aftercare instructions

The condensate water, food left on the roof, and what should not sit beside a ledge if the attraction is to stay gone.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

A follow-up on tension and corners

Netting slackens and corners open over time; the visit corrects that and closes any new position.

Questions about this district

Al Zahir's building is very old and the stone is very weak; can we fit mesh to the wall?

The old stone is indeed weak, but we use fitting methods designed for weak masonry that anchor the mesh without deep drilling that could weaken the fabric further.

The large hotel has hundreds of windows and openings; where does protection start?

We focus on the roof first and the main openings on upper floors, then protect other openings progressively as agreed with the hotel management.

Do the hospital and library buildings serve as pigeon sources for the whole district?

Public buildings may attract pigeons if visitors throw food, but the primary pigeon source is the mountains surrounding the district.

The nearby mountains hold historic caves; can we seal them to stop pigeons?

The historic caves are legally protected and cannot be sealed. Protecting the hotel roof stops pigeons settling on your building even if they still shelter in the hills.

The old hotel has big open balconies; do we fit mesh to the balconies themselves?

We can fit mesh to large exposed balconies, but this requires hotel management approval because it affects the appearance guests see from outside.

Is treatment in Al Zahir more thorough than treatment in new districts?

Yes, old building needs deeper and more comprehensive treatment because pigeons are well-established, foundations are weak and humidity is high.

How much does bird and pigeon control in Al Zahir cost?

It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Al Zahir.
