Why they keep coming back in Safa

The first reason

Vast vacant plots between sparse villas

Safa is mostly empty planned land with no construction yet, and the few built villas are dispersed far apart. Pigeons come from wadis and hills to settle on the first villa they find, because vacant plots offer no roof shelter or ledge. Treatment here must focus on securing the existing villa before surrounding villas are built, because pigeons will have multiple choices once building density rises.

Proximity to Wadi Urana, wadis and hills

Wadi Urana and Wadi Al Sharai are very close to the district and are permanent sources of wild pigeons descending in search of shelter. Pigeons in these new areas are wild birds moving by water and roof availability, not settled pigeons in old buildings. They are more transient and more dependent on what shelter the immediate vicinity offers than pigeons in established residential areas.

Incomplete construction and remote services

The district is unfinished and services are distant, meaning existing villas have no protective building envelope around them. Pigeons can reach them easily from the wadis and meet no natural barriers. Treatment must be proactive because the first villa may receive constant pigeons as long as the district remains sparse and unbuilt. Survey the roof and the facade

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

The land around my villa is mine. Do we treat the land or just the house?

Jabal Al Tariqi is very close to the north. Do pigeons come from the hill every day?

Yes, Jabal Al Tariqi is a constant pigeon source, especially in cold and wet seasons. Correct treatment makes the villa unattractive to settlement even though the hill is near and pigeons are frequent.

Villas around mine are not yet built. Is treating my villa alone enough now?

Treating your villa now is sufficient and effective while surrounding villas remain unbuilt. Once residents move into other villas, those properties may need treatment too, but that decision comes later when construction reaches them.

The district is brand new with few residents and clean roofs. Why do pigeons come to my villa?

Pigeons come from the wadis and hills searching for roost shelter, not for food or dirt. In a new sparse district, the new villa is an obvious refuge for wild pigeons already in the nearby landscape.

Will completing construction, roads and services reduce pigeons within a year or two?

Completing construction may change pigeon patterns but will not stop them. Once villas and building spread around yours, pigeons may shift to another villa instead of being stopped entirely. Early treatment is better than waiting for the district to develop.
