The abundant green spaces and irrigated gardens throughout the scheme attract large bird populations, flocks are bigger than in denser neighbourhoods, and the proximity to the Haram boundary creates a different pattern of nesting and movement. Sharai's regular grid has a large public park, spacious garden plots around villas, and wide gaps between buildings. These irrigated green areas draw flocks of pigeons and birds not just to nest but to live and breed in numbers larger than in dense residential quarters.

Villas in Sharai have modern flat roofs, but the gaps between each villa and its neighbours are relatively wide, and the elevated roof level of newer apartment blocks offers the birds safety from ground level and nesting cavities in those inter-building gaps.

Sharai is a relatively modern residential scheme north east of Makkah along King Faisal Road, with villas and apartment blocks laid out regularly. Vacant land remains in parts of the scheme, and the area includes a cemetery, parks and numerous mosques within the planned grid.

Modern air conditioning units and copper pipework are clean, but the gaps surrounding them become preferred nesting spots, and the deterrent must cover the full gap completely to be effective.

We walk the roof, the projections, the condenser platforms and the shafts, separate the nesting positions from the perching ones, and measure and photograph every ledge.

Strip the nests and treat the parasites

Droppings are wetted before they are lifted so nothing goes airborne dry, bagged closed, and the nest position is treated for ticks and mites before the surface is sanitised.

Close and fit

Netting tensioned on a perimeter wire with no gap at the corners, spikes or wire on the narrow projections, metal mesh across vents and shafts, and the roof drains freed of the nest material packing them.

The follow-up visit

We come back to check the tension, the corners and any position the flock has moved to, and correct what has slackened before a bird finds it.

Questions about this district

There is a large public park beside us full of pigeons. Will they move to our roof?

Yes, birds from the park breed rapidly and move into neighbouring roofs and villas. We fit deterrents to your roof edges and balconies, and we recommend reducing irrigation around your building and keeping food and water indoors and covered at all times.

A nest has built up in the gap between our villa and next door. How can you reach it?

We contact your neighbour and seek access permission, we carefully remove any temporary fencing if needed, remove the nest and droppings, then fit a deterrent to the roof edge of each villa to stop pigeons from landing in that gap.

Pigeons build new nests in the same spot every year. Will they come back?

Yes, unless we prevent landing on the ledge or gap itself birds will return and rebuild. Permanent deterrents and regular inspections reduce returns, and we recommend an annual roof check of villa properties to catch any new activity early.

Our house is new and the roof is clean. Why do pigeons pick our roof out of all the villas here?

Clean new roofs appeal to pigeons because they look safe and free from threats, and gaps around air conditioning units and pipework provide shelter from wind and sun that older properties may not offer.

Will the deterrent damage the roof garden or any plants we grow on the roof?

The deterrent mounts to the roof edge or balcony rail, and will not harm plants unless they are right against the ledge. We recommend moving any large pot close to the edge away from the perimeter where birds would land.

The neighbourhood is new and services are still being built out. Will the problem get worse once it is finished?

Yes, once development and landscaping are complete and green spaces spread the bird population may grow further. The deterrent remains effective but may need periodic review as the neighbourhood matures and more green areas become established.
