Rest houses and farms in Al Mahjar Jeddah

Al Mahjar is a southern Jeddah district west of Al Wazeeriyah toward the coast, where large hospitals occupy the old quarantine station site. The location is close to the Islamic Port, the Refinery and old Petromin popular quarter. Pests arrive from three directions: the port, the refinery and the old popular districts through shared pipes and vacant land.

  • Targeted, not broadcast

Product goes into cracks and runways, never sprayed across open surfaces.

  • Told before we start

What we will use, where it goes, and what to cover or move before we arrive.

  • A follow-up visit

We return after the first treatment, because what survives it does not show on the day.

  • Homes and businesses

Apartments and villas, and kitchens and stores that need a record of each visit.

Why they keep coming back in Al Mahjar

Residential zones and hospitals in Al Mahjar experience varying pest pressure depending on position relative to port, refinery and old Petromin. Pests move through open drainage channels and streets. The method is set out in full on how we approach Rest houses and farms.

The first reason

The Islamic Port and Refinery supply multiple pest sources both imported and established

The port receives daily shipments from every continent. Containers and trucks carry diverse insects. The refinery provides a warm humid environment where pests breed. Pests migrate from port and refinery into neighbouring residential areas.

The second reason

Open stormwater channels carry pests from vacant land and the Industrial City

Open drainage channels provide direct pest highways. Open channels hold standing water and pest shelter. Mosquitoes, flies and rodents use these channels for movement.

The third reason

Old popular Petromin district borders Al Mahjar with degraded buildings and vast vacant plots

Petromin quarter holds old decaying buildings and wide vacant plots. This supplies vast shelter for rodents and scorpions. Pests migrate from Petromin into Al Mahjar across shared borders and streets.

The site decides the shape of the programme

Al Mahjar is very close to the Islamic Port, the Refinery and Industrial City. The air remains damp year round and winds change direction seasonally. Old Petromin district beside it holds aged buildings and vacant plots with accumulated waste.

A concrete boundary wall with open sandy ground behind it

The foot of the wall

Boundaries between residential areas and vacant land and the refinery are weak or absent. Rodents and scorpions cross easily from zone to zone.

Dry palm fronds and building blocks piled on the ground

Frond and block piles

Piles of rejected steel, metals and timber from the refinery and Industrial City shelter vast pest populations. These piles are exposed and close to homes.

An irrigation channel holding still water beside cultivated ground

Standing water

Standing water collects in open channels and excavations. Mosquitoes breed in enormous numbers in these confined damp environments.

Feed sacks stacked on a store floor

The feed store

Refinery and Industrial City storerooms provide year round shelter and feeding. Pests breed there then migrate into residential property.

An empty pen with straw on the floor and a metal rail

Pens and bedding

Pens may exist in old districts. Livestock and poultry provide abundant food and bedding provides shelter.

A closed metal exterior door with the gap beneath it visible

The building that stays shut

Sealed buildings such as storerooms, warehouses and abandoned structures hold dark damp voids where pests gather.

How we work

  1. 1

Walk the site and number the points

We walk the boundary, the feed store, the pens, the water sources and the buildings, record the species present, the burrows, the entry points and every standing water source, and number the monitoring positions on a plan.

  2. 2

    Lift what things hide under

The piles, the rubble, the fallen dates, the feed sacks pushed up against the wall. On any large plot these gather simply because there is room for them, and clearing them brings the numbers down before a single product is used.

  3. 3

The perimeter band and targeted treatment

A band at the foot of the wall and the buildings, treatment into the burrows and cracks, locked rodent stations fixed along the route, and mosquito breeding sites treated in the water itself.

  4. 4

Scheduled visits and a sheet each time

We come back on an agreed schedule, read the same points, renew the band the sun and the irrigation have used up, and write down what was found, what was applied and where, and what the site needs closed.

What the rest house and farm programme includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

A site walk and a map of the points

The boundary, the buildings, the pens and the water sources, and a plan with the monitoring positions numbered before anything is installed.

  • A metal floor drain

Water sources treated at the source

Drinking troughs, drip lines, tank outlets and anything that stands for days, because mosquitoes come out of water and not out of the air.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

A treated band at the perimeter

The foot of the wall, the building bases and the path edges, which is the line anything coming off the open ground has to cross.

  • A gloved hand applying bait into a joint

    Locked rodent stations

Fixed and numbered along one route, and closed so that neither a child's hand nor an animal on the site can get into them.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    What the site does afterwards

What to cover, where to move animal water bowls, when irrigation can start again without washing the band off, and the ventilation time, which we give you on the call because it changes with the product and the space.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

    Scheduled visits and a record

A schedule agreed ahead of the seasons, the same points read every time, and a record of what was found, what was treated and what is still open.

What is different about South Sub-Municipality

The South sub municipality runs from the edge of Old Makkah Road down to Al Khumrah and the southern corniche. Dense residential districts sit beside new subdivisions such as Al Sanabil and Al Taawun, warehouse fringes such as Al Saruriyah and Al Sarawat, and an old seaside settlement at Al Quzayn. Open stormwater channels cross the housing, and the warehouses, the vegetable and livestock markets and the nearby Islamic Port and Industrial City give pests shelter, food and year round humidity. Pressure is greatest in the older quarters, where drainage networks are ageing.

Questions about this district

Al Mahjar is close to the port. Does this mean exotic pests from other countries?

Yes. The port receives goods from every continent carrying different insects. Some are unfamiliar to Jeddah and require special treatment methods.

Open drainage channels carry water and pests. Can we treat them?

Direct channel treatment is outside our scope but we focus on pest entry points to houses and hospitals coming from the channels.

Old Petromin quarter is beside us with aged buildings and accumulation. Does this increase pest pressure?

Significantly. Old popular quarters provide vast shelter for pests that migrate into newer districts.

Hospitals supply abundant food for pests from kitchens. Surely this attracts insects?

Yes. Hospitals provide rich food from their kitchens and clinics. This draws pests from surrounding areas.

Do port winds carry pests from shipping containers to residential areas?

Flying insects can be wind transported. But the main movement occurs through pipes, channels and ground level routes.

There are many vacant plots everywhere. Do we need stronger more frequent treatment?

Yes. Vacant plots provide permanent rodent shelter. Treatment must be stronger and more frequent than other districts.
