We walk the perimeter after dark with an ultraviolet lamp, which makes a scorpion show up against wall and soil, and we record the harbourage, the ways in and how much prey is present.

Treat the harbourage and the building edge

Dust into the wall joints and the dry voids, and a targeted band tight against the foundation and around openings, because the material holds longer on a porous surface than on tile.

Close the ways in and remove the prey

A sweep under the doors, sealing where air-conditioning and drain pipes pass through, mesh over openings, and treatment of the cockroaches and insects it feeds on, so the reason to come in goes with them.

The follow-up visit

A scorpion can sit in its harbourage for weeks without moving, so the first pass does not always reach it. We come back to refresh the perimeter band and check what has appeared since.

Very likely yes. The cellar beneath your flat or an adjoining shop is far damper than any flat and holds stored goods that provide shelter. The scorpion may climb through pipes or gaps between floor levels.

If I treat my flat alone, will that stop the scorpions, or must the cellar be treated too?

Treating your flat alone may stop scorpions temporarily, but they will return from the cellar if it is not treated. The best solution is to treat the flat, the cellar and the gaps between them together, or coordinate with the shop owner on routine treatment of the lower level.

That depends on the lease and who owns the entire building. If you own the whole structure, you are responsible. If you rent only the flat, it is best to inform the shop owner and the building owner and ask for joint treatment.

How can I protect my flat from scorpions climbing from below?

Sealing gaps and crevices around pipes and joints in the floor reduces direct entry. Good ventilation and low moisture in your flat make it less inviting. Regular inspection of corners and lower walls is essential.

Is treating the whole district at once better than treating my flat alone?

Treating the entire district or most buildings together is far more effective and saves money over time. If the whole area is exposed, individual treatment saves money only for a short while.
