Water tank sterilization in Sharai Makkah
Sharai is a mixed quarter with modern villas, apartment buildings and vacant plots laid out on a regular grid. Tanks vary widely in size and type, from large tanks beneath luxury villas to small tanks in apartment blocks. King Faisal Road divides the area, and its distance from the Haram affects incoming water quality.
-
Potable-rated materials
Linings and disinfectants cleared for drinking water tanks, not general-purpose products.
-
You get the downtime first
How many hours the tank is out of service, told before we start rather than after we finish.
-
A first-draw flush
We run the first draw off after refilling, and the tank is not handed back until the water runs clear.
-
Ground and roof tanks
Villas, apartment blocks and premises that need a written record of each visit.
Why the job is different in Sharai
Tanks here are very mixed: some modern in new villas, others old in apartment buildings, and distance from the Haram means water pressure varies throughout the network. The method is set out in full on the full Water tank sterilization page.
Large villas have deep, massive underground tanks
Modern villas in Sharai have large basement tanks that collect heavy sediment on very deep floors. Cleaning needs substantial water drainage and sediment removal measured in bags.
Apartment buildings share one small tank serving many units
Older apartment blocks have a single tank serving dozens of flats, and each flat draws at different pressure. Shared pipes accumulate silt fast.
Water pressure fluctuates due to distance from the Haram
Sharai is far from the Haram and main pump station, so pressure varies and water sometimes moves slowly. Fluctuating pressure causes sediment to settle unevenly and biofilms to shed unpredictably.
The character of Sharai
Mixed district: shops at street level with homes above them
A mixed quarter means diverse tanks, pipes and varying pressures. Cleaning large villas needs heavy equipment to drain thick sediment; apartments need coordination with residents because tanks are public. Fluctuating pressure means sterilization needs longer flushing to reach distant pipes.
What we read inside the tank before anything starts
The core of Sharai in north east Makkah, laid out on a regular grid with the Haram boundary running along the western edge. It contains villas, apartment buildings, vacant plots, Sharai Park, the cemetery, the medical complex and many mosques.
Sediment on the floor
Sediment in large villa tanks is heavy and thick, settled on very deep floors that may be a metre or more deep.
The slime film on the wall
Biofilms grow on tank walls, especially around intake points and inlet pipes.
Light and heat
Long pipes from tank to distant flats may allow fine sediment to settle along the route.
The lining and any cracking
Fluctuating pressure causes air and anaerobic bacteria to enter old tanks.
The lid and the openings
Cracks and cavities in large concrete tanks harbour resistant bacteria.
What shows up at the tap
Resistant bacteria multiply in long narrow pipes where pressure is low.
How we work
-
1
Inspect and record the condition
We open the hatch and work through what the tank is made of and how big it is, how deep the sediment lies, the state of the lining, whether the lid and the overflow seal, and whether there is a crack that has to be repaired before any sterilizing.
-
2
Drain and lift the sediment out
The water goes out, then the silt and sand are lifted off the floor by suction rather than pushed toward the outlet, because pushing them sends them into the house pipework and the heater.
-
3
High pressure wash
Walls, floor, corners and the area around the outlet, until the slime film is completely gone. This is the step that makes the sterilizing after it mean anything.
-
4
Sterilize, rinse, then return to service
The sterilizing agent goes onto the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid and is left for its contact time, then we rinse, refill and run the furthest tap until the whole line is clear.
What water tank sterilization includes
-
A recorded inspection
Material, capacity, sediment depth, the state of the lining, the lid and the overflow, all before any work begins.
-
Draining and sediment removal
The water out, and the silt and sand lifted off the floor instead of being pushed into the outlet and the house pipework.
-
High pressure washing
Walls, corners and around the outlet, until the biofilm that no disinfectant penetrates has gone.
-
Sterilizing the internal surfaces
A sterilizing agent meant for drinking water tanks, applied to the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid, and left for its contact time.
-
Line flush and aftercare
Rinse, refill and a flush from the furthest tap, when the water is usable again, and what to change in the filter afterwards.
-
The next cycle
We agree the right interval for your tank from how it is filled, how much sun it takes and the condition of the lid.
What is different about Al Sharai Sub-Municipality
Al Sharai is the eastern growth front of Makkah along King Faisal Road and the Taif road. Settled quarters sit beside recently renamed schemes where plots are still vacant and buildings are going up, so construction sites, fill and open excavations lie next to occupied homes. Wadi channels such as Wadi Mudarraja, Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Al Mughammas carry flash floods after rain and dry out to damp silt, while dust blows off the open hills. Roadside shops, restaurants and warehouses line the Taif road, and to the east the area shades into villages, palm farms and springs.
Questions about this district
Are large villa tanks easier or harder to sterilize?
Harder, because large size means heavy sediment, more water to drain and longer working time.
Why does water quality differ between villas and apartments in Sharai?
Villas have separate modern tanks. Apartment buildings share one public tank serving many units, each drawing water at different pressure.
Does fluctuating pressure in the network cause tank problems?
Yes. Pressure swings cause uneven sediment settlement and may create small tank cracks over time.
Is water from the Haram clean by the time it reaches Sharai tanks?
Distance and pressure swings mean water may carry fine sediment before it reaches the tank.
How often should a shared tank in an apartment building be sterilized?
At least twice yearly, especially if incoming water quality from the main station is unstable.
Does cleaning shared pipes in an apartment need neighbours' approval?
Yes, because pipes are shared and water will be cut to all flats during cleaning. Advance coordination is necessary.
How much does water tank sterilization in Sharai cost?
It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Sharai.
