Fumigation in Al Haram Makkah

Al Haram means the Grand Mosque itself and the ring of hotels, plazas and commercial blocks around it where pilgrims and Umrah visitors arrive year-round. Offices, showrooms and small storerooms sit in this zone, some in newly opened construction sites and others in older blocks framed by steep hillsides. Fumigation here is shaped by the relentless flow of people and goods.

  • Targeted, not broadcast

Product goes into cracks and runways, never sprayed across open surfaces.

  • Told before we start

What we will use, where it goes, and what to cover or move before we arrive.

  • A follow-up visit

We return after the first treatment, because what survives it does not show on the day.

  • Homes and businesses

Apartments and villas, and kitchens and stores that need a record of each visit.

Why they keep coming back in Al Haram

Continuous flow of pilgrims and incoming stock means reinfestation happens fast, and air moving swiftly between tower blocks thins the gas and reduces its hold. The method is set out in full on our Fumigation service.

The first reason

Small storerooms with shared pilgrim-facing entrances

Storerooms and showrooms share building entries used by pilgrims and visitors arriving constantly. Sealing the building for fumigation means stopping visitor flow, which is impossible during peak seasons when the crowds do not pause.

The second reason

Hillside air currents and flood paths bringing insects down

Old flood channels from Jabal Qaiqaan and Jabal Khandamah still drain toward the mosque, carrying insects and moisture downslope. Air moves fast through these passages, thinning gas concentration and allowing insects to establish quickly in sheltered spots.

The third reason

Open construction ground beside occupied stores

The Rua Al Haram scheme and northern expansion left excavated land and open sites adjoining active storerooms. Insects move readily from these open voids into neighbouring shops, and treating the shops alone does not stop the source.

The character of Al Haram

Commercial area: offices, showrooms and small stores

A commercial area means storerooms, shops and constant movement of goods in and out. Fumigation here requires coordination with trade flows and visitor arrivals, and timing is critical.

Before treatment

What decides whether fumigation is the right method

The Grand Mosque zone is enclosed by Jabal Abu Qubais and Jabal Qaiqaan, with excavated ground and open construction sites lying beside occupied buildings on sloped terrain.

Sacks of grain stacked inside a store

Grain and feed

Grain and feed stocks are rare in Haram showrooms, but dates, coffee and seasonal goods are stored here and need inspection before entry.

Cartons stacked on warehouse racking

Cartons and packaging

Cartons from showrooms, pamphlets and literature pile in storerooms, and clearing them improves gas circulation through the space.

Wooden pallets stacked in a yard

Pallets and timber

Pallets and timber from incoming shipments stack densely, and moving them beforehand strengthens fumigation effectiveness.

The closed doors of a shipping container

Containers and consignments

Containers and consignments arrive continuously from ports and overseas, and inspecting them before storage is essential.

Where the gas escapes

Gas escape routes are numerous around hotel towers and offices: external cracks, ventilation openings and gaps between adjoining buildings.

Aeration afterwards

Post-fumigation aeration is difficult in areas ringed by towers, where air moves slowly and longer periods are needed for dispersal.

How we work

  1. 1

    Survey and sampling

We identify the pest and its stage, go through the stock, the racking and the corners, measure the volume, and establish whether the place can be sealed as it stands or a sheeted enclosure has to be built over the stacks.

  2. 2

    Sealing and preparation

Sheeting sealed to the floor around the stacks or the room closed up, vents, drains and door edges shut, the area emptied of people and warning signage placed before anything is introduced.

  3. 3

    Gas introduction and monitored exposure

The dose is calculated from the volume, the commodity and its temperature, and readings through the period confirm the concentration is still there at the end of the exposure and not only at the start.

  4. 4

    Aeration, clearance and the record

Forced ventilation, then repeated readings until the space is handed back, and a report covering what was found, how the enclosure was built, the exposure period, the readings and what needs correcting at goods inwards.

What fumigation includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

    A recorded survey

Pest and stage, samples from the commodity, and the volume of the space, before fumigation is decided on at all.

  • A metal floor drain

    Sealing the enclosure

Vents, floor drains, door edges and cable runs, which is where the gas goes if nobody closes them.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    Dosing and monitored exposure

Dose set by volume, commodity and temperature, with readings tracking the concentration to the end of the exposure.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    Aeration and clearance readings

Extraction and forced ventilation, then repeated readings, and the space is not opened to staff until a reading allows it.

  • A gloved hand applying bait into a joint

    Monitoring points afterwards

Pheromone traps and check points on the goods inwards route, because fumigation leaves nothing behind to protect what arrives next.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

The report and a follow-up visit

A written record of the work and its readings, and a date to re-check the stock and deal with anything new.

What is different about Al Ghazza Sub-Municipality

Al Ghazza sub municipality wraps around the north and west of the Grand Mosque, from Al Shamiyah, Al Qararah and Shaib Amir round to Jarwal and Al Taysir. Large tracts were cleared for the northern expansion and the Rua Al Haram scheme, leaving excavated ground and open construction sites beside ageing blocks that now serve as dense seasonal lodgings in Jarwal and Al Taysir. Old flood paths still fall from Jabal Qaiqaan and Jabal Khandamah towards the mosque, and markets and eateries crowd Al Masjid Al Haram Road and Umm Al Qura Road.

Questions about this district

Can we fumigate Al Haram showrooms while pilgrims and visitors are still arriving?

No, operations must cease completely and the space must be evacuated, as the fumigation gas is not safe for direct exposure. Fumigation must be scheduled in closure windows or between major visitor flows.

Do insects migrate from the open construction sites into adjoining commercial shops?

Yes, the excavated and open ground from development projects provides shelter for insects, which then move into nearby shops. Treating the shops alone does not arrest the continuing flow from these open sources.

How do we handle the old flood channels that still fall toward the Grand Mosque?

Flood paths carry insects and soil harbouring bacteria and fungi downslope. Treatment of these channels before or after shop fumigation depends on their position relative to the area being treated.

Does fast-moving air between hotel towers reduce gas concentration in the shops?

Yes, air flowing quickly through gaps between towers thins the gas rapidly. Higher dosing and longer exposure time are needed to compensate for this air movement.

Do furniture and carpet showrooms around the Haram need special treatment?

Yes, furniture and carpets harbour pests in their fabric. Stock must be inspected before storage and may need separate treatment before entering the premises.

After fumigation of the showroom, when can goods be displayed again?

After full aeration and readings, usually within hours. However, testing air quality and confirming no gas odour remains before allowing visitors back into the zone is advisable.

How much does fumigation in Al Haram cost?

It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Al Haram.
