Empty, invert, cover: saucers, containers, old tyres and roof gullies. Every point that disappears is a treatment that never needs repeating.

Larval treatment, then the resting surfaces

Water that cannot be drained is treated so the larva never completes, then a residual goes under planting, beneath outdoor furniture and along low shaded walls.

Ajyad sub municipality takes in the districts that press against the Grand Mosque from the south and west: Ajyad, Al Hajlah, Al Shubaikah, Al Tandabawi and Al Mansour. Hotels and rented apartment blocks for Umrah visitors stack up along Ajyad Street and Ibrahim Al Khalil Street, with kitchens and restaurants running aday and night in season. Behind them, Al Shubaikah and Al Tandabawi keep narrow old lanes on hillside ground where buildings and drains are ageing, and demolition and construction sites are a constant presence around Jabal Omar and the central zone.

Questions about this district

The hotel tower has hundreds of people in season. Must we treat the whole building?

Yes, but treatment focuses on gaps between towers, roofs, voids below floors, and around air conditioners and restaurants. We do not spray bedrooms when guests are there but passages, restaurants, and dark voids must be treated.

The seasonal flat is rented to different families every week. Do we need weekly treatment?

Treatment focuses on voids and surfaces and shared restaurants and passages, not bedrooms. One or two treatments in season is enough if we focus on the right spaces and treat the hotel as a single system.

Hotel air conditioner water drips onto the flat below. Does that cause problems?

Yes. The water pools on the flat's roof and the voids between it and the hotel. Air conditioner discharge must be rerouted away from residential flats or these voids must receive special treatment.

The roof spaces between hotel towers are completely dark. Do they need special treatment?

Yes. Permanent darkness and trapped moisture between towers need deep treatment focused on surfaces, walls and cracks. These spaces never dry.

Hotels run restaurants day and night. Does that affect the mosquito problem?

Yes, very much. Restaurants open all the time provide constant water and food. Cooking and wash water pools in small restaurants and in sub floor voids. Treating the restaurants and voids around drain openings is very important.

Mosquitoes get much worse in Ramadan and Hajj. Why?

In these seasons hotels are completely full and restaurants run at peak and water pools quickly. The very high occupancy and constant activity mean that standing water in restaurants is not cleared regularly as it is in other months.
