Water tank sterilization in Safa Makkah

Safa is a new emerging district at the southernmost edge of Al Sharai, most plots remain unbuilt and services are still distant. Tanks here are very few and those installed are new, but water may sit for long periods in distant supply pipes before reaching the house.

  • Potable-rated materials

Linings and disinfectants cleared for drinking water tanks, not general-purpose products.

  • You get the downtime first

How many hours the tank is out of service, told before we start rather than after we finish.

  • A first-draw flush

We run the first draw off after refilling, and the tank is not handed back until the water runs clear.

  • Ground and roof tanks

Villas, apartment blocks and premises that need a written record of each visit.

Why the job is different in Safa

The district is in early development phases with few buildings and relatively new tanks, but water travels far from distribution centres. The method is set out in full on what Water tank sterilization involves.

The first reason

New tanks but very long supply pipes

Tanks in Safa are new but receive water from pipes stretching dozens of kilometres. Water sits in pipes for long periods and becomes contaminated before reaching the tank.

The second reason

Emerging development with vacant plots

Most plots in Safa remain unbuilt. The few existing tanks sit idle at times and standing water creates biological deposits.

The third reason

Vast distance from distribution hubs

Safa is far from main distribution stations. Pressure is low and water moves slowly through the long pipes.

Safa on the map

Safa sits about 3.5 km from Kawthar and about 4.5 km from Mughammas.

What we read inside the tank before anything starts

The southernmost district of Al Sharai sub-municipality, south west of Al Mughammas and recently renamed. Open ground between Jabal Al Tariqi and the channels of Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Urana, with planned plots that are still mostly unbuilt and far from services.

Fine wet sand seen close up

Sediment on the floor

Fine mineral sediment from distant pipes accumulates on the floors of new tanks over time.

A concrete wall carrying a damp green layer

The slime film on the wall

Walls of new tanks are generally clean but incoming water may carry bacteria from older pipes in the distribution network.

A plastic water tank standing on a rooftop

Light and heat

Supply lines from the distribution station to the tank are very long and standing water in them causes secondary contamination.

A concrete surface carrying fine cracks

The lining and any cracking

Humidity inside new tanks is relatively low, but standing water may produce odour and colour change.

A metal cover over a water tank opening

The lid and the openings

New tank floors may contain pipe debris even if the tank itself is clean.

Standing water in long pipes causes slow bacterial growth and organic matter buildup.

How we work

  1. 1

    Inspect and record the condition

We open the hatch and work through what the tank is made of and how big it is, how deep the sediment lies, the state of the lining, whether the lid and the overflow seal, and whether there is a crack that has to be repaired before any sterilizing.

  2. 2

Drain and lift the sediment out

The water goes out, then the silt and sand are lifted off the floor by suction rather than pushed toward the outlet, because pushing them sends them into the house pipework and the heater.

  3. 3

    High pressure wash

Walls, floor, corners and the area around the outlet, until the slime film is completely gone. This is the step that makes the sterilizing after it mean anything.

  4. 4

Sterilize, rinse, then return to service

The sterilizing agent goes onto the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid and is left for its contact time, then we rinse, refill and run the furthest tap until the whole line is clear.

What water tank sterilization includes

  • A technician inspecting with a flashlight

    A recorded inspection

Material, capacity, sediment depth, the state of the lining, the lid and the overflow, all before any work begins.

  • A metal floor drain

    Draining and sediment removal

The water out, and the silt and sand lifted off the floor instead of being pushed into the outlet and the house pipework.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    High pressure washing

Walls, corners and around the outlet, until the biofilm that no disinfectant penetrates has gone.

  • A spray nozzle in close detail

    Sterilizing the internal surfaces

A sterilizing agent meant for drinking water tanks, applied to the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid, and left for its contact time.

  • A clean kitchen counter after treatment

    Line flush and aftercare

Rinse, refill and a flush from the furthest tap, when the water is usable again, and what to change in the filter afterwards.

  • The visit report being written on a clipboard

    The next cycle

We agree the right interval for your tank from how it is filled, how much sun it takes and the condition of the lid.

The character of Safa

New development: ongoing construction and vacant plots between the homes

A new-development district means new tanks but water supply from very distant sources. Sterilization focuses on purifying incoming water from long pipes rather than cleaning the tank itself.

Questions about this district

Why is sterilization important for new Safa tanks even though they are new?

New tanks are safe from rust but water arriving through very distant pipes may carry bacteria. Sterilization ensures the tank is free from bacteria transported through far-off supply lines.

Does standing water in long pipes leave deposits in the tank?

Yes, the longer the pipes, the more sediment and debris accumulate. Tank sterilization and flushing removes these deposits.

How often does a new tank in an emerging district need sterilization?

New tanks in developing areas need sterilization immediately after installation, then once yearly.

Will additional building in Safa affect water quality?

As more buildings connect, pressure patterns will shift and water speed will change, which affects pipe sterilization effectiveness.

How do we handle very long pipes when sterilizing a tank?

We sterilize the tank itself first, then flush the pipes from the furthest tap to ensure sterilizing agent reaches every point.

Do new tanks follow the same sterilization cycle as old ones?

New tanks need fewer sterilization cycles, but if water arrives from a very distant source, cycles become more important.

How much does water tank sterilization in Safa cost?

It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Safa.
