Water tank sterilization in Zamzam Makkah
Zamzam is a new northern extension of Al Sharai between Uhud and Wadi Al Jaranah, a planned scheme on open ground north of the Makkah to Taif expressway. Building is sparse and tanks are very new, but water comes from wells containing significant sand and salt. Small ravines cutting the scheme may introduce contaminants to tanks if not adequately protected.
-
Potable-rated materials
Linings and disinfectants cleared for drinking water tanks, not general-purpose products.
-
You get the downtime first
How many hours the tank is out of service, told before we start rather than after we finish.
-
A first-draw flush
We run the first draw off after refilling, and the tank is not handed back until the water runs clear.
-
Ground and roof tanks
Villas, apartment blocks and premises that need a written record of each visit.
Why the job is different in Zamzam
The scheme is very new and most tanks are less than a year old, yet hard and sandy water begins to deposit sediment quickly even in new tanks. The method is set out in full on the full Water tank sterilization page.
Very new tanks but contaminated water
Tanks in Zamzam are brand new and may not have received proper sterilization at the factory. The water filling them is very hard and sandy, so sediment accumulates from day one.
Small ravines and natural drainage
Small ravines cut through the scheme and drain towards Wadi Mudarraja. If tanks are not raised sufficiently, rainwater and runoff from the ravines may seep in.
Sparse building and exposed tanks
The scheme is new and building sparse, so tanks may sit on open ground. Heat and sun affect the water and dirt enters through any small opening.
The character of Zamzam
New development: ongoing construction and vacant plots between the homes
Zamzam is a new scheme on open ground far from dense building. Tanks are new but isolated and water is very hard. Sterilization here requires attention to protecting tanks from external contaminants and the surrounding ravines.
What we read inside the tank before anything starts
A new northern residential scheme on open ground north of the Makkah to Taif expressway, accessible from Al Jaranah Road on the west, crossed by small ravines draining towards Wadi Mudarraja, with scattered building as yet.
Sediment on the floor
Sandy and saline sediment from hard water accumulates on the tank floor quickly, and high-pressure washing lifts this hard layer.
The slime film on the wall
Algae and microalgae grow quickly even in new covered tanks; still water and dim light support rapid growth.
Light and heat
Drain and inlet pipes may be weak points if unprotected from rain and runoff; checking them before and after sterilization is essential.
The lining and any cracking
Humidity and heat from sun on exposed tanks accelerates contaminant growth; uncovered tanks fare worse.
The lid and the openings
Bacteria and mold grow on walls, floors and internal pipes, and sterilizing agent must reach all these places.
What shows up at the tap
Signs of contamination appear as water turning yellow or brown from sand and salt, or musty smell from algae and bacteria.
How we work
-
1
Inspect and record the condition
We open the hatch and work through what the tank is made of and how big it is, how deep the sediment lies, the state of the lining, whether the lid and the overflow seal, and whether there is a crack that has to be repaired before any sterilizing.
-
2
Drain and lift the sediment out
The water goes out, then the silt and sand are lifted off the floor by suction rather than pushed toward the outlet, because pushing them sends them into the house pipework and the heater.
-
3
High pressure wash
Walls, floor, corners and the area around the outlet, until the slime film is completely gone. This is the step that makes the sterilizing after it mean anything.
-
4
Sterilize, rinse, then return to service
The sterilizing agent goes onto the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid and is left for its contact time, then we rinse, refill and run the furthest tap until the whole line is clear.
What water tank sterilization includes
-
A recorded inspection
Material, capacity, sediment depth, the state of the lining, the lid and the overflow, all before any work begins.
-
Draining and sediment removal
The water out, and the silt and sand lifted off the floor instead of being pushed into the outlet and the house pipework.
-
High pressure washing
Walls, corners and around the outlet, until the biofilm that no disinfectant penetrates has gone.
-
Sterilizing the internal surfaces
A sterilizing agent meant for drinking water tanks, applied to the walls, the floor and the underside of the lid, and left for its contact time.
-
Line flush and aftercare
Rinse, refill and a flush from the furthest tap, when the water is usable again, and what to change in the filter afterwards.
-
The next cycle
We agree the right interval for your tank from how it is filled, how much sun it takes and the condition of the lid.
What is different about Al Sharai Sub-Municipality
Al Sharai is the eastern growth front of Makkah along King Faisal Road and the Taif road. Settled quarters sit beside recently renamed schemes where plots are still vacant and buildings are going up, so construction sites, fill and open excavations lie next to occupied homes. Wadi channels such as Wadi Mudarraja, Wadi Al Sharai and Wadi Al Mughammas carry flash floods after rain and dry out to damp silt, while dust blows off the open hills. Roadside shops, restaurants and warehouses line the Taif road, and to the east the area shades into villages, palm farms and springs.
Questions about this district
Does a brand new tank in a new scheme need immediate sterilization?
Yes, even if new. Hard sandy water begins depositing sediment from day one, and early sterilization prevents algae and bacterial buildup.
Do the ravines around the scheme contaminate tanks?
Yes, if tanks are too low. Rainwater and runoff from the ravines may enter the tank if it is not well sealed.
Where does the water come from to Zamzam tanks?
From wells, not the municipal supply in this new scheme. Well water is much harder and contains far more salt and sand.
Is once-yearly sterilization enough in this scheme?
No. Hard sandy water means faster sediment buildup. Twice yearly or every six months is better.
The tank is still covered, does it need sterilization then?
Yes, even covered tanks. Humidity and bacteria grow in darkness and still water. Sterilization prevents slimy layer buildup on walls.
Will more building in the scheme reduce contaminants?
Yes, slightly, because buildings provide shade and shelter. But hard water remains the main issue.
How much does water tank sterilization in Zamzam cost?
It is set after the inspection, because the price follows the type of infestation, the size of the space, how far it has spread and the number of visits it needs. Send a photo and a description on WhatsApp and we will give you an estimate before we reach Zamzam.
